Master Shower Transformation - West Chester

The Challenge

Our clients in West Chester had lived with their builder-grade fiberglass shower insert for over 15 years. It was showing its age—yellowing, hard-to-clean grout lines (from a previous DIY repair attempt), and a dated design that didn't match their recently updated master bathroom vanity.

Our Solution

We designed a complete custom tile shower featuring large-format gray porcelain tiles with a stunning granite corner bench. The design balances luxury with practicality.

Materials Selected

• Wall Tile: 12x24 Rectified Gray Porcelain - minimal grout lines, contemporary look
• Floor Tile: 2" Gray Hex Mosaic - slip-resistant texture with proper slope to drain
• Bench: Prefabricated granite corner seat - elegant, waterproof, and warm to sit on
• Grout: Mapei Flexcolor CQ in Pewter - stain-proof, no sealing required
• Trim: Schluter Jolly in brushed nickel - clean, modern edge transitions

The Process

1. Day 1: Complete demo of existing fiberglass unit down to studs. Inspected framing for any moisture damage (none found—lucky!). Installed new cement board and corner bench framing.

2. Day 2: Applied Schluter DITRA waterproofing membrane to all surfaces. This is the critical step that prevents leaks for decades. Built the shower pan with proper slope to the linear drain.

3. Day 3: Tile installation day. Started with the back wall to establish the pattern, then worked around the shower. Installed the granite bench and cut tiles precisely around it. Built two recessed niches at different heights.

4. Day 4: Grouting and detail work. Installed the linear drain cover, applied silicone at all corners and transitions, and did final cleanup.

The Transformation

The difference is night and day. What was once an embarrassing eyesore is now the highlight of the master suite. The clients tell us they actually look forward to their morning shower now—and guests always comment on how beautiful it is.

The granite bench has become a favorite feature. It's perfect for shaving legs, setting products, or just enjoying a moment of relaxation under the rain shower head.
